An English Teacher Candidate's Perspective

21st Century Learning...?!

Updated: Dec 27, 2022

Hey, my lovely friends! Thank you for being here. Today I want to talk about a topic I find really interesting and want to share with you.

As we all know, technology has become increasingly present throughout the last decades in the 21st century, especially for children. Nowadays, children are extremely competent in the field of technology, as they grow up with phones, tablets etc. around them (Note: Be aware that unfortunately, not everyone has this privilege). This also means that the way children think and learn has changed significantly from the past. Eventually, education has to keep up with these changes and adjust to the new generation of students. We have to adjust the way we teach in order to make education and learning as effective as possible.

This is where today's topic comes into action. 21st century learning is basically a shift in education from traditional methods to a modern, more appropriate approach, in order to prepare students more effectively for their future. Learner's profiles have changed in the regard that students nowadays need certain skills that originally were not part of the education system. The P21 framework gives an insight of what this consists of. It was designed by professionals from different fields to develop the skills that students need to succeed. You can see the framework in the image below.

Generally, 21st century learning means changing education to an extent where it prepares students of the new generation for the 21st century. In order to reach this goal, the previous focus on memorization is shifted on a more collaborative and creative environment. Critical thinking and technology knowledge is desired. To do so, the use of technology in the classroom is crucial.

Especially in the EFL classroom, technology plays a huge role. Most people use tools like online dictionaries, online courses or apps and benefit from the advantages they bring. Indeed online tools can support language learning to a great extent.

To me, this is an essential topic, because as a teacher candidate for the 21st century learners, I want to provide my students with the best opportunities. Since globalization is an ongoing process and students are connecting with people internationally, 21st century learning is important in language learning. Technology takes a huge part in this, because it allows unlimited access to information and easier interaction. Therefore, I think it is vital for teacher candidates to constantly to refresh our technology skills and find tools to integrate into our classrooms.

Have you ever heard of 21st century learning? Let me know what you think in the comments below. I can not wait to hear from you!

Love,

Sara Bal
